Little Tap House is something of a showcase for Maine brewers. The space is rustic and casual, with high-top tables fashioned from Allagash beer barrels and painted brick walls. Local beer lovers and beer tourists alike can get a taste of what’s available from a variety of brewers without leaving the comfort of a barstool.

A diverse beer list pairs well with Little Tap House’s upscale pub fare

MaineToday.com  // ( Carla Jean Lauter )  I am always impressed with the brightness and depth of flavor in every bite at Little Tap House, and thrilled to have a great beer list to pair it with. The beer list usually features a great balance of styles, and there is nearly always a farmhouse ale and a stout or porter on, but the producers vary. If I want to find the wonderful John Henry milk stout from Fore River or something from the now nationally famous (thanks to Bon Appetit) Austin Street Brewing, Little Tap House is where I head first to look for them. This beer list diversity is what stands out when it sometimes feels like tap lists are just drowning in IPAs and pale ales.

There is a certain rusticity to the room with its time-scarred floors and painted brick walls. But there’s plenty of light flowing in through big windows and the casual ambiance is inviting.

"While the other Portland has hogged all the brewing attention and stolen Maine’s lumberjack fashion sense, the original Portland’s making its own waves -- and they’re less likely to make T-shirts about it. Every conversation about Portland’s beer scene rightfully starts at Allagash, one of the best purveyors of Belgian-style beer in the country (Belgians even like it!). Maine Beer Company, just down the highway in Freeport, is hot on its heels."

( The Beer Babe ) "At Little Tap House, for example, there are regularly beers on tap by Maine breweries like Baxter (Lewiston), Gneiss (Limerick) and Atlantic (Bar Harbor). Many Maine-craft fans prefer that breadth of choices to a deep exploration of one brewery’s portfolio."

A Likeable Little Tap House Active Beer Geek // Beyond the allure of locally sourced meals and a fantastic farm to table menu, Little Tap House (LTH) is becoming a power house for craft beer in Portland. They are nestled in the west end of Portland but not too detached from the the Old Port that you wouldn’t want to take a stroll to visit them. LTH’s tap menu is always diverse and mostly local. Just this month they had a few beer events that were impressive.

6. Bissell Brothers’ new location at the Thompson’s Point development, a larger space in which to soak up the brewery’s coveted, hop-forward beers. Next, veer east five miles for a late lunch at 7. Little Tap House, whose 14 taps pour mostly Maine drafts—look for Foundation Brewing, Gneiss Brewing and Marshall Wharf Brewing—that synch with the kitchen’s seasonal pub menu (we’d go for the Beer for Breakfast Sandwich during weekend brunch: two fried eggs, bacon and beer cheese fondue on a grilled bun).

On the edge of the West End, the bar and restaurant is not far from the Cumberland County Civic Center, the State Theatre and the Portland Museum of Art.
